HIPAA Privacy Specialist Job Summary:  
  • Assists in developing and implementing a monitoring and auditing program for overall HIPAA compliance
  • Performs ongoing activities to audit and monitor employee and vendor compliance with HIPAA policies and procedures, contractual obligations, individual privacy rights, and federal and state privacy and security regulations
  • Develops online HIPAA security and privacy compliance training materials for annual refresher training for the health plan and health center employees and contractors; collaborates with department managers to incorporate HIPAA requirements into ongoing departmental training and procedures; conducts in-person training as needed.
  • Manages and conducts HIPAA related complaint and incident investigations
  • Assists in responding to routine and non-routine data requests to use and disclose Fund PHI
  • Drafts and revises HIPAA-related policies, procedures, forms and processes as required to align to current industry trends and regulatory and operational changes
  • Works collaboratively with the HIPAA security team regarding privacy issues related to electronic media or systems development
  • Acts as a general HIPAA resource for all Fund employees, including leadership
  • Provides reports on a regular basis, and as directed or requested, to keep the Privacy Officer apprised of the operation and progress of compliance efforts
HIPAA Privacy Specialist Background:    
  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent work experience required
  • 5-7 years of direct experience minimum
  • Working knowledge and experience with HIPAA and state privacy laws, including in particular with regard to both health plan and healthcare provider operations, or applicable compliance or regulatory experience, required
  • Working knowledge and experience including auditing, monitoring and/or compliance/privacy management
  • Intermediate level Microsoft Office skills (PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
  • Intermediate level Microsoft Excel skills
  • Intermediate level system(s) skills in Captivate desired
  • Excellent written communication skills, including strong editorial ability and the capacity to adjust legal and technical source material to a level of writing understandable by the common person
  • Project management and workflow development
  • Ability to effectively interact with a variety of constituents across all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage competing deadlines and multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, and attend to detail and deadlines to bring projects to a satisfactory conclusion
  • Develop and facilitate presentations
  • Conduct research and provide analysis
  • Deal appropriately with highly confidential and sensitive issues
